Acne >

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions and is caused by an overproduction of oil by the sebaceous glands which builds up within the pores and collects debris, such as dead cells and bacteria, which then develops into a blemish.

Whilst acne is not a serious health threat, it can cause worries and affect self-confidence for those suffering with it. Luckily, there are many treatments on offer to combat the effects of acne and acne scars. There are also a number of skincare options available to patients at the clinic.

Acne can affect any person at any age but most sufferers develop acne during puberty. Some people can develop this condition later in life, which is commonly known as late onset acne.

Early treatment can help to minimise the potential of long-term scarring.

Acne Symptoms >

  • Whiteheads (closed plugged pores)
  • Blackheads (open plugged pores)
  • Small red, tender bumps (papules)
  • Pimples (pustules), which are papules with pus at their tips
  • Large, solid, painful lumps under the skin (nodules)
  • Painful, pus-filled lumps under the skin (cystic lesions)

Acne Causes >

Our sebaceous (oil-producing) glands are affected by our hormones. In people who have acne, the glands are particularly sensitive, even to normal blood levels of these hormones. This causes the glands to produce too much oil. At the same time, the lining of the pores (the small holes in the skin’s surface) becomes thickened and dead skin cells are not shed properly. A mixture of the oil (sebum) and dead skin cells builds up and plugs the pores producing blackheads and whiteheads. The plug of dead skin turns black from exposure to air and not due to dirt.

Acne can run in families, but many people with acne do not have affected people in their family. It is likely that a combination of genetic, hormonal and lifestyle factors (such as diet, stress, skincare products etc) act in combination to cause most acne.

Acne Triggers >

  • Certain medications
  • Hormonal changes: Androgens are hormones that increase during puberty and cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge and make more sebum. Hormone changes during midlife, particularly in women, can lead to breakouts too.
  • Diet: Studies indicate that consuming certain foods — including carbohydrate-rich foods, such as bread, bagels, and chips may worsen acne.
  • Stress: Stress doesn’t cause acne, but if you have acne already, stress may make it worse.

Acne Types >

Papules – Tender to touch…bright red or pink.

Pustules – These are often yellow or white with redness at the base of the swelling.

Nodules – Hard pimples embedded deeply under the skin.

Comedones – Skin-coloured, small bumps (papules) frequently found on the forehead and chin of those with acne.

Whiteheads are closed comedones and Blackheads are open comedones.
